In the picturesque setting of Kyoto’s Arashiyama, the renowned unagi restaurant “Hirokawa” has long been celebrated for its mastery of eel cuisine.
To share its legacy with more diners, Hirokawa has opened “Kiyamachi Hirokawa” in Kyoto’s central Kiyamachi area, near Sanjo Station. This new restaurant offers a unique and immersive dining experience that transforms the way guests enjoy unagi.

Here, diners are invited to grill their own eel, turning the meal into a delightful and interactive event. The experience begins with an exquisite kaiseki course, featuring seasonal ingredients that set the tone for the culinary journey. Freshly prepared eel, expertly handled the same day, is presented for guests to grill over glowing charcoal.

Whether enjoyed as “shiroyaki,” with its pure and delicate flavors, or as “kabayaki,” glazed with Hirokawa’s signature tare sauce, the result is both delicious and deeply satisfying. The finale is a personalized uangi bowl, with the grilled eel served atop freshly steamed rice in a clay pot.

In the tranquil atmosphere of Kyoto, this combination of refined kaiseki cuisine and the joy of grilling your own unagi offers a dining experience that is as memorable as it is delicious.

It is a perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and culinary artistry.
